Blue Ridge Blueberry

Predominant in dry soils where the climate is humid, the Blue Ridge Blueberry, also known as a hillside blueberry shrub, is a springtime plant that blooms with dark-green leaves and dark-blue to purple berries. The shrub is adaptive to a wide range of soil types with an average growth of six feet per year with a height of 9 to 20 inches. Gardeners can expect the Blue Ridge Blueberry to fruit in one to two years after being planted.

In the woodlands, the Blue Ridge Blueberry can be found thriving beneath large shade trees, such as pine or oak, with deep, strong roots. Rarely, the blueberries can be white in color. It’s not unusual to find these shrubs growing wild in well-populated areas, like alongside highways or in fields next to suburban neighborhoods.

While the Blue Ridge Blueberry is native to parts of Canada and all of the United States, it grows mainly in the foothills and Piedmont areas of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. These shrubs are perennials with high bloom rates that begin to show with lush, green leaves in April, after the last frost.

Blue Ridge Blueberry shrubs provide food for wild birds and small animals. The plant’s blooms can be pink, white, and red, and typically appear in late May to early June. The blueberries are lightly sweet and often harvested in early- to mid-August at the peak of ripeness.
